How much do you love wine? If you just want to enjoy it and not think too much, that’s fine. But if you’re curious about the ins and outs of the oak used and tonnage versus hectare, McLaren Vale is your region. There are many ‘serious’ wine experiences to be had here, including the renowned Scarce Earth program. McLaren Vale is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world. “Given that ‘site’ – geology, climate, soil and rainfall – play such a vital role in wine style, local winemakers and viticulturists launched the project to explore and celebrate this diversity with one of the region’s key varietals – Shiraz,” says Jennifer Lynch, general manager of the McLaren Vale Grape Wine & Tourism Association. “Scarce Earth focuses on the effects of single sites – soil, climate and topography – on the wine style.” Officially launched in 2011 with the 2009 vintage release wines, Scarce Earth is now in its sixth release. You can buy these special wines at participating cellar doors.
