Fancy some fishing?

With the Onkaparinga River running through the valleys and the coastline just 10 minutes from the wine region, the area is a fishing hotspot. Local fisherman Andrew Smale says it’s one of the best coastal regions for fishing in South Australia. “Our beautiful coastline offers a number of great fishing spots, with many family-friendly,” he says.

Andrew has his favourite fishing spots including Port Noarlunga jetty, Southport beach (at Onkaparinga River mouth), Onkaparinga River, Moana Beach and Aldinga Beach. “This area fishes exceptionally well all year round,” he says.

All fishing beaches and the river are easily accessible by foot, but if you’re after something offshore, why not book a charter? Andrew also recommends checking out the local fishing and tackle stores and chatting to them about everything from charters to bait and tackle. Try the helpful local stores in Christies Beach and Seaford.

Fishing is a great way to soak up the stunning coastline. “Any time of day is the best time to fish!” Andrew says. “Some of the fish you’re most likely to catch include mullet, salmon, trout, bream and tommy-ruffs, while King George whiting, snapper and tuna can be found off-shore. 
