Discover the best dine in and take-away fish and chips and top fishing spots in Southern Adelaide. Secrets are revealed.
Love fishing? You’re in luck. Dropping a line in the deep blue sea doesn’t get better than the coastline just 10 minutes from the McLaren Vale wine region. The Onkaparinga River is nearby, too. Local tackle shop manager Kosta Giuretis loves fishing and makes sure keen anglers are set up with the right rods, kit, reels, and bait with which to land ‘a big one’.
Kosta’s happy to pass on local tips to anyone who passes through his door and says there’s plenty to catch. Most beaches boast salmon, salmon trout, flathead, mullet, tommy rough, garfish, yellow fin whiting, and squid. “Out of the boat there’s also snapper, King George whiting, trevally, and squid and charters are a great way to experience off-shore fishing.”
Kosta says yellow fin whiting are a good fish to target when you’re land based with fishing beaches and the river accessible by foot.
“During the warmer months, in the shallows, you just need beach worms for bait, small hooks, light gear and you’ll have the time of your life on the beach.” The jetties are great spots too, finding different species throughout the year. At Port Noarlunga jetty during winter there’s salmon, mullet and tommys. Garfish and squid are generally caught year-round and after a good ‘blow’ there’s snapper.
After a relaxing day outdoors, it’s time to cook your catch. Kosta says less is more, especially when cooking yellow fin or silver whiting.
“I’d cook it with seasoned flour (with some tarragon), crumbed and shallow fried. It doesn’t take much. Add some steamed veggies, a glass of white wine and job done. It’s as easy as that,” says Kosta.
