There’s so much to see and do for families across the region, it’s enough to make you wish you were a kid again. Here’s some top family favourites…

Talk to the animals

If animals could talk they’d tell you that 11.30am is a special time at Woodstock Wildlife Sanctuary. That’s when the winery crew feed the property’s kangaroos each day. It’s a wonderful way for children and adults to get up close and personal with eight kangaroos, plus a number of rescued red kangaroos, wallabies and an emu. Kids love meeting and petting Dusty, Abraham, Rawnsley, Maple, Eden, Praire, Ottie, and Tommy. “There is always so much excitement and joy in the children’s face when they can get up close to our wonderful native animals,” says Woodstock general manager Simon Spier. Families also enjoy the winery’s cellar door and Coterie Restaurant. “We are surrounded by beautiful rustic bushland with a playground and large lawn area for the children to play and offer full a la carte dining with several kids options including half serves of all our mains for young ones with discerning palettes.”

Hit the playground

Jubilee Park at Port Noarlunga is always a winner. The adventure playground was built by the community and is an impressive collection of castles, forts, slippery dips, swings, and a ball game space. There’s plenty of seating, shelter, barbeque facilities, plus walking and cycling tracks. Don’t forget Geronimo the life-size giraffe!  Other great playgrounds include:

  • Frank Hilton Reserve, Maslin Beach
  • Gemtree Wines, McLaren Flat
  • Jubilee Park Adventure Playground, Port Noarlunga
  • Market Square, Old Noarlunga
  • McLaren Flat (bakery next door)
  • McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Visitor Information Centre, McLaren Vale
  • Rotary Park, Christies Beach
  • Thalassa Park (including thestorybook walk), Aberfoyle Park
  • Woodstock Wines, McLaren Flat

Explore a maze

Maxwell Wines in McLaren Vale boasts more than just great food and wine. There’s also a large conifer maze on the estate. Children and their parents are invited to explore the green labyrinth, check at the cellar door first.

Ride the Shiraz Trail

Hire a bike (or take your own) and cycle, walk, skate or run along this picturesque trail. You can walk as far or as little as you like. The McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Visitor Information Centre is a great place to start. The Visitor Centre has recently installed bikes for hire too.

Family friendly wine tasting

For a one-stop online guide to family-friendly wineries you can’t go past Winey Kids. The site is the brainchild of blogger, local resident and mother Becky Hirst. It is a great inspiration for families and here are some top picks:

Discover the reefs

Aldinga and Port Noarlunga reefs are a great way to entice your little one’s inquisitive side. Spy all sorts of fascinating sea creatures like starfish, periwinkles, or even crabs, particularly when the tide is out.

While most eateries and cafes cater for kids, here’s some favourites with menu’s for the little ones:
